My old Samsung phone (Galaxy J3) has finally officially called it quits after just passing the two year mark of ownership. This morning it will not charge, will not turn on, and is completely dead. Over the past couple of weeks I have been battling a battery that shuts off at 50%, the headphone jack that has been broken for over a year, and the microphone that works about 25% of the time when not in speakerphone. I was willing to deal with the issues because I like a device with some character (just like cars). But really I was just being a cheapskate and aside from the issues, the slow turd of a phone worked better than any other phone I have ever owned. While that really means I have owned some truly terrible phones, this one just worked the best all the way to the end. Usually I have been plagued by screens that become nonresponsive, software that just bloats into glitch hell, or more serious processor/ram failures. I am not gonna lie, I am abusive with phones. I just throw them around, take no more care of them than I would a set of track tires on the Miata, and always try to use them beyond their limits with custom roms and rooted apps.
Anyways, I am super glad that a couple days ago I decided that I needed a new phone finally and after a fervent nighttime google search, I came across the LG G6. My NUMBER ONE requirement was an SD slot. After that my only requirements were a price well below $200 and something that would be an improvement on my current phone. I started out looking at bargain basement phones (per usual) but then I came up with the idea that why dont I look at “high end” phones from a couple years back? Naturally I started at the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S7 but eventually thought the prices were still to high and stumbled across the LG as an “underrated Samsung competitor”. I for a time contemplated throwing out m y need for an SD card and just going with a Pixel 3a but the higher price and no SD card were just too much for me.
Now that my old phone is entirely dead, I will be downloading google maps local maps and some music onto my Nexus 7 and deal with only having connection at my hotel for a couple of days. I ordered my G6 from Ebay as an “open box” for $94 and it arrives on Tuesday. So 4 whole days with no phone, lets see how that goes! I have my number on google voice and I dont have service at work anyways so I wont miss much with lugging around the tablet.
Naturally:

starred for the song.....i love it..always have...dunno why
i dont know anything about phones.... im on my first smartphone here... a nokia 7+ and the main thing ive learnt so far is that its too bigly to fit in pockets...takes decent pictures tho...and serves as a pretty good television when i need to watch the f1 away from home
kinda sucks as a phone tho.... i mean... i have to swipe twice just to get to the option to call someone....this seems a little off for a phone...
not like my 3310.... you picked that up and it was ready to call....or bludgeon someone....now that was a phone
tho...on the second part...i think i could bludgeon someone with the 7 too and it would be fine...its pretty solid

Thing about the lg’s is software updates. Took my g7 over a year to get Android 9. And I basically never have security updates. Nokias are on the cheap end but have constant Android updates.
Nokia 7.1 - Android 9.0 Pie - 64 GB - Dual Camera - Dual SIM Unlocked Smartphone (Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile/MetroPCS/Cricket/H2O) - 5.84" FHD+ HDR Screen - Blue - U.S. Warranty https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HD2X91Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_rRKHDbYC44WN5
You could probably find one used for closer to 200$

Unrelated since you have already bought the device but for 250$ you could get the bold N1, which is a surprisingly feature packed budget device with sd expansion, amoled display and in screen fingerprint sensor.

Well the whole “doesn’t work as a phone” thing was the primary reason why I absolutely needed to replace the old one. I really kind of need a phone while I’m on travel for work. Not enough to need a dedicated work phone but at least a call or two a day and it’s inconvenient dealing with no functional phone for that. I also look forward to a much better camera. I’d probably have use getting into a real camera of some sort but it’s just another expensive hobby that I’d rather avoid for now. So a phone camera that will work with a version of the Google camera app was a necessity for me.

Oh I never care one bit about software updates. If anything I don't want any updates ever in an ideal world. It's just like kinja updates, they break everything and take away features. I'm happy with Android 7 or 8, I haven't seen any useful features past that. And really I'd be happy with anything beyond 4.0. I ran a phone with 2.3 for the seriously longest time. That Nokia seems like a decent option too that I hadn't seen.

I was trying to avoid budget devices. It's like buying a new Kia instead of a used BMW. But yeah that one seems pretty darn good for the price. I really don't care about finger print scanners at all, I don't even use a lock screen code to begin with. Which has come in handy when I lost my phone once, someone was able to just pick it up and call my friend I was with. Either way that's a good option to know about. I like my sub $100 price point, which hopefully doesn't screw me over with a ghetto eBay deal.

Understandable, I went big money with a Google pixel 3 several months ago and since the Bold N1 and pixel 3a came out ive been kicking myself for not waiting and getting one of those
